In February 2001 the congregation of Mount Florida Parish Church worked through the Church,Community and Change process with Tearfund.  Through listening to the community, both residents and those working in the area, a clear need was identified for a befriending service for older people as many were experiencing isolation and loneliness within the community.  This was confirmed through discussion with the local medical centre.  In conjunction with the medical centre, we sought to establish a befriending service and The Church on the Mount Befriending Service was set up. In 2011 the name of the service changed to The Mount Befriending Service, but our aims remained the same-to offer support to vulnerable elderly members of Mount Florida and its environs, to offer direct support to alleviate the pressures for families who care for elderly relatives at home and to provide trained volunteer Befrienders to support and encourage vulnerable elderly people to become involved in their local community.
